I have always known that my first post would have to be about the researcher who has single handedly shaped much of my career, Dr. John Gottman. From the time I was in middle school I was fascinated by relationships, particularly the marriages around me--and specifically the differences between them. How did some couples know their roles so clearly while for others the lines were blurred? Why did some make communication seem easy and natural, where others did not communicate at all?

In 1998, as a first year doctoral student at The Ohio State University, I found myself continuing to ask these same questions about couples and their relationships, and was ready to learn the secrets of making relationships work when I was introduced to Dr. John Gottman and his empirically-validated method for working with couples. As I devoured his research I began to understand Leo Tolstoy's quote, "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." In early 1999, I found myself sitting in large conference hall with the guru himself learning how to help couples strengthen their relationships with evidenced-backed techniques.

Since then I have continued to train with the Gottman Institute and have worked with hundreds of couples applying the principles of the Gottman Method. Just like Love Maps are the foundation for a solid relationship, my professional foundation is credited to Dr. John Gottman. He has published over 200 scholarly articles, authored or coauthored 40 books, created numerous trainings, an app, a podcast and a vibrant website community So, when anyone asks me where do I even start to help my relationship, I tell them to peek Into the world of Dr. John Gottman.

"Successful long-term relationships are created through small words, small gestures, and small acts." -John Gottman
